Wines that Communicate Emotions and Values
The Domaine Robert Roth wine range faithfully embodies the work and the aesthetic sought in the vineyard and in the winery: precision, strong identity, sensitivity, balance, and diversity. A range built around three axes: Les Terres de Grès, the Domaine’s premier wines, produced by the marriage of several plots; the Lieux-Dit, individual plot wines faithfully rendering the three historical terroirs of the Soultz wine-growing area; and the Compositions, purely composed wines that take us well away from the well-worn paths. Wines that have been tailored for enjoying with fine cuisine, for sharing, and very often, for keeping. Pure wines with a clear, asserted style, conveying emotions and values.
Wine balance indicator
To make it easier to understand the range of wines from the Domaine Robert Roth, which covers a broad range of styles, from the driest to the sweetest, a wine balance indicator from 1 to 4 is given for each wine. This rating is defined as follows:
1 Dry
2 Medium dry
3 Medium sweet
4 Sweet
Organic Certification
Les Terres de Grès
The sandstone is the common point of the various terroirs of the Domaine Robert Roth. A real common thread, it is found in greater or lesser proportions in the soils of the great majority of the plots. This is why it gives its name to the Domaine’s premier wines. Les Terres de Grès come from a single grape variety from different plots situated on several terroirs, blended to create wines with balanced, complete personalities: the finesse and structure of the sandstone, coupled with the diversity of the 7 Alsace grape varieties. Les Terres de Grès should be drunk young, or within 5–6 years after bottling — but always in good company!
EDELZWICKER
Les Terres de Grès 2020
Wine under conversion to organic farming
A blend of terroirs but also of grape varieties, the proportions of which change with each year. It seeks to be fresh, simple yet not without structure, full-bodied yet dry. A humble, agreeable balance.
SYLVANER
Les Terres de Grès 2020
Organic wine
Unfairly neglected, the Sylvaner grape variety can produce wines that are full-bodied, persistent, and complex. This is one of those, with its herby notes and its subtly roasted, salty finish.
PINOT BLANC
Les Terres de Grès 2022
Organic wine
Fruit and freshness. It gives the impression of biting into ripe yet delicately tart yellow fruit, like the Mirabelle plum. Comes from old Pinot Blanc vines in the Kaltacker locality.
PINOT GRIS
Les Terres de Grès 2020
Organic wine
Power and generosity best describe this dry, heady wine. A wine with texture, very present on the palate with a great deal of volume and a finish that still has energy, it will set the tone from the aperitif to the cheese.
RIESLING
Les Terres de Grès 2022
Organic wine
A wine of precision and sparkle: its lively, invigorating character is reminiscent of citrus fruit, while its finish raises the saliva for a long time and stimulates the appetite. It comes from young vines in the Mittelbourg locality.
GEWURZTRAMINER
Les Terres de Grès 2020
Wine under conversion to organic farming
Powerful and spicy, as its name indicates (“Gewürz” means spices in German). Its oriental profile, associated with roundness on the palate, mild then subtly strong on the finish, invite you on a voyage of the senses and of the table.
PINOT NOIR
Les Terres de Grès 2022
Organic wine
Red with fruit with tannins that are soft but very present. Despite being crunchy and fruity, this is a real Alsace red that should be served at room temperature, not cool, in order to fully appreciate the whole of its dimension.
PINOT NOIR ROSÉ
Les Terres de Grès 2022
Organic wine
Made from young Pinot Noir vines in the Kaltacker and Hirschacker vineyards, this rosé is both lively and tender. Particularly seductive with its notes of wild berries, it’s the wine for fine summer days.
CREMANT
Brut de Grès 2021
Organic wine
Produced according to the traditional method, the Crémant “Brut de Grès” is a vintage ‘blanc de blanc’ from old Pinot Blanc (90%) and Auxerrois (10%) vines growing in soils on pink sandstone rock dating from the Triassic era. Matured between 18 and 36 months on racks, the very low dosing with Extra-Brut liqueur, along with its vinosity, make this Crémant full-bodied and lively. A balance that makes it highly versatile: perfect as an aperitif, to accompany a seafood platter, with fresh cheeses, or with fruit desserts.
Mittelbourg
Classy, Precise, Balanced, Sharp, Mouth-watering
The combination of the poor limestone soil, the slope, and the south-facing exposure of the Mittelbourg create particularly classy, precise wines, with mature, hot acidities. The mineral structure built by the limestone gives its wines remarkable length and balance, ending with finishes that are almost salty and with a lot of texture, a real statement of the terroir. With a lot of substance, the wines from Mittelbourg are perfectly suited for accompanying fine cuisine. Rather reserved when young, they will be revealed if decanted, but will take on their full dimension with a few years of patience. They won’t suffer in any case from being laid down for one or two decades in a good cellar.
SYLVANER
Mittelbourg 2020
Wine under conversion to organic farming
Planted on the steepest part of the Mittelbourg locality, this old vineyard of Sylvaner alone proves that this grape variety, often underestimated, is capable of splendidly revealing its terroir. Low yields in the vineyard and maturation on full lees in casks for a year in the winery give this wine a clear-cut, lively palate, subtly salty on the finish with notes of mild tobacco and bay.
RIESLING
Mittelbourg 2019
Organic wine
The limestone subsoil of the Mittelbourg hill, associated with its altitude and its south-facing exposure, are conducive to slow, complete ripening of the Riesling grapes. Ripeness that is enhanced by long fermentation and exceptional maturing for 23 months in oak casks on full lees. Rare length, finesse outlined by mature acidity, all surrounded by firm substance. The spearhead of Domaine Robert Roth.
PINOT GRIS
Mittelbourg 2020
Wine under conversion to organic farming
The Pinot Gris grape variety and the Mittelbourg terroir complement each other perfectly. The rich, generous consistency of the Pinot Gris, underlined by cask maturation on lees, is here balanced by the finesse and tautness contributed by the limestone nature of the soil. The bouquet is discreet, but soon opens up when decanted. On the palate, the attack is rich, warm, then gives way to a dry, mouth-watering profile that stimulates the appetite.
GEWURZTRAMINER
Mittelbourg 2020
Wine under conversion to organic farming
In a clear break with the aesthetic generally encountered with this grape variety, Gewurztraminer Mittelbourg, exclusively from an old vine planted on the summit and sunniest part of the limestone lands of Mittelbourg, reveals a smoky and spicy aroma. The texture, the precision and the power in the mouth mark the spirits. A perfectly dry balance, patinated by aging in tuns, which allows you to rediscover the gastronomic potential of this great grape variety.
Hornstein
Invigorating, Smokey, Powerful, Angular, Well-constituted
The limestone soil rich in marl and the cool easterly exposure make the wines from Hornstein particularly invigorating and powerful. Marked by smoky notes to the nose, their structure on the palate is characterized first by a certain roundness at the start, very quickly followed by a sensation of warmth, to end with a slightly bitter, salty, smoked touch that may be described as umami — a term taken from Japanese culinary vocabulary. Spirited when young, Hornstein wines will mellow when decanted or will happily soften with age.
RIESLING
Hornstein 2022
Organic wine
Old vines firmly rooted in the limestone marls of the Hornstein, this plot of Riesling exhibits the most noble aspects of its East-facing exposure. Matured for a year in casks on full lees, fresher than its cousin from the Mittelbourg, the Hornstein Riesling is a lively, well-honed wine with notes of flint, with a mouthfeel that is both acidic and mineral which evolves towards a smoky, marine finish, perfect to accompany the finest seafood.
MUSCAT
Hornstein 2019
Wine under conversion to organic farming
Facing due east, at the heart of the Hornstein locality, are two small adjacent plots, one planted with Ottonel Muscat and the other with small-grain Muscat. From these plots, the Hornstein Muscat is a powerful dry wine with a very assertive bouquet, with notes of sage, bergamot, and liquorice. Clear-cut and invigorating on the palate, with a very elegant, long-lasting finish on citrus fruit and herbs.
GEWURZTRAMINER
Hornstein 2020
Wine under conversion to organic farming
Profoundly marked by its terroir, the Hornstein Gewurztraminer is a powerful, heady wine. The limestone marls and the morning sun have forged this Gewurztraminer in an atypical style: the bouquet is very spicy and smoky, sometimes even reminiscent of soot. Very complex on the palate: toasted notes, orange peel, all with a great deal of texture. The slight sweetness on the finish brings harmony to the whole.
Orschwillerbourg
Rich, Suave, Generous, Well-rounded, Substance
With its rich, deep marl/sandstone soil and its due south facing exposure, Orschwillerbourg offers wines that are always full-bodied and rich. With a velvety, creamy texture, they stand out because of their fruit, their generosity and their volume on the palate, yet without lacking structure and balance, thanks to the delicacy of the sandstone that gives them the necessary finesse. Very outgoing in the first year after bottling, keeping will increase their full-bodied nature and generosity a little more, and can continue for a good ten or more years.
PINOT GRIS
Orschwillerbourg 2020
Organic wine
The Pinot Gris grape variety and the Orschwillerbourg terroir work together here in this medium-dry full-bodied wine. Its aromas are reminiscent of patisserie, quince jelly, going as far as reaching smoky notes when it’s had a chance to breathe. On the palate, the attack is rounded, inviting, with a long, energetic finish. This is a wine of great maturity, powerful and balanced.
PINOT NOIR
Orschwillerbourg 2022
Organic wine
The Orschwillerbourg produces deep red full-bodied wines with a certain tannic power. Its bouquet marked by fruits like blackcurrant, velvety on the palate — 11 months maturing in oak casks give it an elegant, structural relief. When young, it is recommended to decant this unfiltered wine an hour before serving to tone down its strength, or to leave it to age quietly.
MUSCAT
Orschwillerbourg 2020
Organic wine
Planted with Ottonel Muscat (80%) and small-grain Muscat (20%), the old vines of Orschwillerbourg Muscat produce a medium-dry wine with a delicate yet exuberant aromatic content of white flowers like elder, lily, or Great Mullein. Initially rounded and fruity, contrasting with the fresh, tart character of the finish. A Muscat of substance and length, anything but thin!
GEWURZTRAMINER
Orschwillerbourg 2020
Organic wine
The deep Oschwillerbourg soil gives this Gewurztraminer a very rounded, velvety dimension, found at once in the bouquet: candied, ripe, bewitching… The palate remains in this same spirit: generous, fleshy, suave, with a great softness counterbalanced by a touch of spice and a certain noble bitterness that gives it even more length.
GEWURZTRAMINER
Vendanges tardives 2020
Organic wine
A real concentration of the Orschwillerbourg Gewurztraminer, from which this Late Harvest wine extracts outstanding substance, obtained by over-ripening of part of the Gewurztraminer grapes from this locality. Here we find the consistency and generosity of the Orschwillerbourg Gewurztraminer enhanced by a very high sugar content and an aroma of crystallized exotic fruits like ginger.
Les Compositions
The fruit of ideas and inspirations made into wines, the Compositions are free, iconoclastic, envisaged in meticulous detail, and produced with the aim of shaking up old ideas. Wines that dare to step outside the box in Alsace, on several counts: blending of the grape varieties, selection from a single or several plots, specific vinification, etc. A broad palette that is contributing to widening the field of expression for Alsace wines.
SULZER 2020
Organic wine
In Alsace dialect, ‘Sulzer’ means ‘a citizen of the town of Soultz’. This “Village wine” is a blend of equal parts of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Sylvaner from the Orschwillerbourg and Mittelbourg localities, cask-matured for a year. A taut profile with substance, easy to drink and the perfect accompaniment to a fine meal. Its label is a homage to the first label by Victor Roth (1905–1970), founder of the Domaine.
HORANGE 2021
Organic wine
Horange, or “Orange Wine from the Hornstein” is a white wine from the maceration of Muscat, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling grapes coming exclusively from the Hornstein locality. Maceration for 20 days prior to pressing makes it possible to extract from them the orangey hue and the fine yet assertive tannins, so characteristic of the orange wines inspired by a millennium-old method of vinification from Georgia. After maturing for a year in old oak casks and then bottling without filtration, Horange reveals all the power of the Hornstein terroir through its invigorating tannic dimension.
MONT SAINT GEORGES 2018
Wine under conversion to organic farming
In the heart of the Orschwillerbourg locality once stood the village of Alswiller, razed in the 13th century, known for its chapel dedicated to St George, which survived until the Revolution. Today, only the name of the hill, now covered in vineyards, bears witness to this memory. Planted with Sylvaner and Pinot Gris harvested together, the Mont Saint Georges is then fermented and matured for 18 months in oak casks, then bottled without filtration. A great rich, concentrated wine, with roasted and mineral notes and a long, saline finish.
ESPRIT 2018
Wine under conversion to organic farming
The meeting of two terroirs and two grape varieties that are completely opposed but which the very sunny 2018 vintage was able to bring together. Blending at harvest on October 24th 2018 of Riesling from Mittelbourg and Gewurztraminer from Orschwillerbourg, both harvested over-ripe, three weeks after the end of the harvest. Fermentation and aging of 23 months in new oak barrels, bottled without filtration on August 6, 2020.
